CODULA FUILI

Codula Fuili is a deep gorge located in the Supramonte of Dorgali, in one of the most spectacular and wild areas of Sardinia.

Although it is a dry canyon, Codula Fuili offers spectacular views, rocky walls, Mediterranean vegetation and a truly wild environment, making it an ideal destination both for beginners taking their first steps into canyoning and for experienced adventurers looking to discover a fascinating route through the Supramonte.

The route includes four abseils, the highest of which is 20 metres. All the descents are performed with the feet in contact with the rock, allowing you to stay supported against the wall, and are technically straightforward.

There are two ways to experience Codula Fuili.

The first option is to arrange a vehicle shuttle, focusing exclusively on the canyoning section, with an estimated duration of approximately 3 hours.

The second option is to combine the canyoning experience with a spectacular approach hike, following the side of the gorge towards Cuccurru Su Corvu.

CUCCURRU SU CORVU

But what is Cuccurru Su Corvu?

It is a mountain ridge reaching approximately 506 metres above sea level, overlooking Codula Fuili. The name Cuccurru is associated with the idea of a summit, elevated place or hill, while Corvu refers to the raven or crow. The name can therefore be interpreted as “the hill of the crow.”

The approach hike is approximately 2.8 kilometres long, with an elevation gain of around 300 metres.

The trail offers continuous panoramic views over the Gulf of Orosei and also gives us the opportunity to visit an ancient shepherd's dwelling, beautifully restored and known as Cuile Toddeitto.

We take our time on the approach to Codula, which takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, surrounded by a wild and fascinating landscape.

THE CODULA FUILI DESCENT

Once we reach the start of the canyon, we begin walking along the riverbed. In some sections, short scrambling passages are required before reaching the first drop.

From this point onwards, there is no mobile phone signal: we are completely immersed in nature.

After putting on our harnesses and helmets, we are ready for the first descent: an approximately 4-metre abseil leading to a small ledge. From here, we continue with a second 4-metre abseil. When conditions allow, the two sections can also be combined into a single descent.

We then move deeper into the canyon, which gradually becomes wilder and more atmospheric.

The high rock walls close in around us, reducing the amount of direct sunlight and creating a cooler environment compared to the outside.

The Codula, a Sardinian word used to describe a gorge, canyon or ravine, is characterised by lush vegetation. Large holm oaks, carob trees and extensive patches of ivy cover the surrounding rock walls, creating a remarkably evocative landscape.

THE 20-METRE ABSEIL

As we reach the second and highest drop, the gorge narrows until it is only a few metres wide in places.

To reach the anchor point for the descent, we follow a short fixed traverse, before preparing for the spectacular 20-metre abseil.

The descent takes us into the most impressive section of the route: a large, dark and atmospheric chamber, where sunlight barely manages to filter through the high rock walls.

After just a few steps, we reach the final abseil, approximately 18 metres high, which leads towards the exit of Codula Fuili beneath an evocative rocky arch.

The immense force of the water during one of the major floods that affected the area carried and wedged a huge boulder between the canyon walls. At this point, the gorge narrows to just a few metres.

Little by little, the sunlight ahead of us becomes brighter and brighter as we approach the exit.

TOWARDS CALA SISINE

Once we leave the narrowest section of the gorge, we walk through a spectacular oleander forest. During the flowering season, approximately from June to October, the oleanders fill the Codula with vibrant colours and intense fragrances.

After around 30 minutes of walking, we finally reach the beautiful beach of Cala Sisine.

Here the landscape changes completely: the rocky walls of the gorge open towards the sea and become a favourite destination for sport climbers, who enjoy the numerous climbing routes equipped along the cliffs overlooking the Codula.

A DRY CANYON, BUT FULL OF ADVENTURE

Although Codula Fuili is a dry canyon suitable for beginners, the experience offers all the ingredients of a real adventure: abseiling, hiking, rocky walls, caves, wild vegetation and spectacular views.

It is the perfect route for anyone who wants to discover canyoning while exploring one of the most fascinating environments of the Supramonte and the Gulf of Orosei.

Wild nature, adventure, canyoning and the sea: Codula Fuili is an experience you won't want to miss! 🌊⛰️
