RIU 'E FORRU
Riu 'e Forru is a granite canyon located in the Gennargentu Arzanese area. This small gorge is a true natural gem, carved into the hard granite rock. The river offers an unforgettable adventure through high rock walls, natural pools, natural water slides and, finally, the spectacular Pirincanes Gorge.
To reach Riu 'e Forru, we head deep into the wild heart of Barbagia. From State Road 389, we take a turn-off leading to a narrow bridge and continue along the paved road. After a few kilometres, the road turns right, taking us alongside Lake Bau Muggeris. In spring, this stretch of road offers particularly beautiful views and spectacular scenery.
Once we reach the river junction, we cross the bridge and keep to the right, parking beneath several large holm oaks.
From here, we continue on foot along the paved road for approximately 1.4 kilometres. The road, with its wide and steep hairpin bends, leads to a junction, where we take the dirt track. The track passes near an old shepherd's shelter before reaching the riverbed of Riu 'e Forru.
The river immediately begins to take on the characteristics of a true gorge, with high and impressive rock walls leading us towards the first waterfall, which can be overcome either with a small natural water slide or with a fun jump.
As we continue downstream, the natural pool leads us to the first spectacular 18-metre rappel (C18), which ends in another beautiful emerald-green natural pool.
At the bottom of the rappel, the surrounding landscape reveals all its majesty. A large and impressive rock chamber frames the natural pool, which ends at a spectacular natural ledge overlooking the second rappel.
The second 23-metre rappel (C23) descends alongside a beautiful waterfall, which in turn creates another spectacular natural pool.
The final section of the river features a long 15-metre natural water slide (C15), followed by two fun natural slides, one approximately 3 metres long and the other around 5 metres, both enclosed within the narrow gorge.
At this point, Riu 'e Forru joins the Rio Calaresu and enters the famous Pirincanes Gorge. Here our aquatic trek back begins, allowing us to explore the spectacular gorge before returning to the parking area where we started.
